Good afternoon, Columbia. In case you missed it, it’s been a tough week for local restaurants.

After weeks of negotiations with the city over the apartment building’s appearance, plans for a seven-story, 200-unit complex in the Vista have gotten final approval. The new construction would displace three downtown restaurants.

“We’re really excited about the project and the changes that have been made,” Subtext Development Manager Matt Swedenburg said at the Dec. 18 meeting.

'“We’re trying to say goodbye to everyone,” one employee said.

Though the restaurant’s fate is now determined, the development that threatened to displace it is up in the air.

Gus Manos, the longtime Springdale town councilman who opened Zesto in West Columbia’s Triangle City in 1960, died late last week at age 88.

“West Columbia lost a true legend today,” West Columbia Councilman David Moye posted to Facebook on Dec. 19.

Manos had remained active at the local chicken and ice cream staple, even after passing most operations to his son several years ago. The restaurant has been a major landmark in the Midlands for over half a century.
