Subscribe TodayGood afternoon, Columbia. Want to know which downtown apartments are getting your taxes?
For the past ten years, Richland County has been quietly offering big tax breaks — about half off on property taxes for a decade — to lure apartment developers to Columbia and shape what projects have gotten off the ground. The first to take advantage were student housing developers, but now leaders are trying to get others to come to the table.
We’ve got a list of every project that got the tax breaks since 2015. See what’s on it.
“I’m sure some people don’t like it, but it’s been very impactful for the community,” Jeff Ruble, CEO of the Columbia Area Development Partnership, said.

A local developer with experience converting downtown office buildings to hotels offered to do the same to a building the city has been looking to sell. He expected the city to keep him in the loop — until The Post and Courier reported the city was already finalizing a deal with an out-of-state hotel chain, for half what the local developer offered.
“This is not right for the taxpayers of the City of Columbia, losing this kind of money.”
The rebuffed developer is accusing the city of pursuing a shady deal that will cost taxpayers millions. City officials say everything has been aboveboard.
The City of Columbia is finalizing a nearly $2 million deal to hire a New York-based to create a master plan for the long-awaited riverfront park. The company has a long resume, including New York’s High Line and Chicago’s Union Pier.
The master plan is the latest step in the growing momentum taking Columbia’s park on the banks of the Congaree from fantasy to reality.
Lantern Hotel Columbia is planning to open its doors next month, the hotel announced.
It’s just the latest new hotel to spring up in downtown and the Vista, as city leaders continue on a years-long quest to get more hotel rooms in Columbia to bring back big events like March Madness.
